Perinatal nurses are involved in the of care for mothers and babies during the prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum phases of pregnancy. They also provide benign gynecology and urogynecology patient care.

Overview

AU Medical Center (AUMC) is a Regional Perinatal Center for obstetric and high-risk obstetric care and the only hospital with 24/7 in-house obstetricians and anesthesiologists. We see patients from 16 weeks of pregnancy to 6 weeks postpartum.

  • We are the only level III Maternal Care Center (highest level) with a level IV NICU (highest level) located within the same hospital.
  • We are one of two ECMO Centers in the state of Georgia.
  • We promote couplet care, where babies room-in with mothers after birth.
  • We offer GA 5 Star breastfeeding training to help support breastfeeding mothers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing.
  • Additional credentials preferred for experienced nurses:
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) training
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support-OB (ACLS-OB)
    • S.T.A.B.L.E.
    • Fetal monitoring training within one year of hire.
    • (All RN’s must maintain BLS, ACLS, NRP and S.T.A.B.L.E. recertification every two years.)
  • All new graduate nurses participate in a year-long Nurse Residency Program in addition to orientation and the above certifications. 

Commitments

  • Nursing staff is oriented to all areas of the unit providing versatility in the daily routine.
  • Each nurse rotates between Labor and Delivery and our Antepartum /Postpartum/GYN units.

What to Expect

Multidisciplinary rounds are conducted Monday through Friday mornings and focus on patient-care planning and discharge planning. The unit is overseen by a maternal-fetal medicine attending of the day and general OB/GYN attending of the day, along with residents, and covers the following OB services:

  • Labor and delivery
  • Antepartum and postpartum
  • Social work
  • Case management
  • Nurse manager
  • Assistant nurse manager
  • Clinical outcomes manager
  • Lead charge nurse

Additional providers invited to participate in morning rounds for care planning include:

  • Midwifery
  • Anesthesiology 
  • Pediatrics

Our perinatal units provide services to both low-risk and high-risk obstetrical patients and newborns, and GYN care (benign and urogynecology) to mothers. All rooms in the perinatal unit connect to a central fetal monitoring system and cardiac telemetry and are protected by an Infant Security System. 

7 East (7E) and 7 West (7W) - Labor and Delivery

  • 8 Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) rooms: All LDR rooms are private and include space for assessment and care of newborn infants (7 East)
  • 2 obstetrical operating rooms (7 East)
  • 4 designated OB Emergency Room (OB ED) (7 West)
  • 2 antepartum/labor swing rooms (7 West)

7 West (7W) - Antepartum/Postpartum/GYN (Mother-baby Unit)
This unit is for antepartum and postpartum patients, mother-baby couplets, and overflow benign gynecological patients, along with a respite nursery for newborn procedures.
Beds: 14 private rooms

Staffing: Census driven and will be sufficient at all times in terms of numbers, skill mix, and competency to meet the needs of patients. RN staffing for patient care assignments is based on AWHONN Staffing Guidelines in conjunction with hospital approved staffing GRIDS for 7W.
