Transfusion Services
The Blood Bank plays a vital role in the care of our patients at AU Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Georgia.
Our Approach
We provide testing and blood products for all patients, including those with sickle cell disease, having surgeries, receiving transplants, undergoing chemotherapy, and patients residing in the intensive care units. We also provide specialized products for pediatric patients in the neonatal units, hematology/oncology clinics and those having open heart surgery.
The Blood Bank performs the collection and processing of Hematopoietic Stem Cells for the Bone Marrow Transplant Program. Stem cells are collected by the Apheresis Department and given to the Blood Bank where the cells are processed, frozen and stored until they are transplanted. With 65 being performed in 2018, the number of stem cells being processed for stem cell transplants is increasing every year.
The AU Medical Center’s Blood Bank provides the highest quality of testing and standards. We have passed and maintain accreditation with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT).
