da Vinci: Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition where weak pelvic muscles can no longer support the bladder, vagina or bowels and they slip or fall out of place. As a patient, you recognize prolapse as a feeling of pressure or bulging - causing pain, loss of control and affecting your quality of life.

Surgery to bring these organs back up to their normal position can be one solution. In the past, surgeries to repair pelvic prolapse required open surgery, long incisions and could be very painful. Today, Augusta University Medical Center is one of only a few centers in the region to offer da Vinci robotic surgery, which allows our specially trained urogynecologic surgeons to perform these procedures through a series of small incisions.

In fact, our board-certified urogynecologists have performed more of these surgeries than any other physicians in the Augusta area.

Da Vinci minimally invasive robotic surgery offers numerous benefits over traditional open surgery:

  • Significantly less pain;
  • Less blood loss and need for transfusions;
  • Less risk of infection;
  • Less scarring;
  • Shorter hospital stays;
  • Shorter recovery time; and
  • Quicker return to normal activities.

Surgeries to repair pelvic organ prolapse can involve using sutures, a patient’s own tissue, biologic mesh or synthetic mesh. Read more about the latest findings on use of synthetic mesh in these procedures.
