Teen and Adolescent Gynecology

Teen and Adolescent Gynecology

For girls, the adolescent years can be difficult. Beginning at about age 10, girls undergo a series of physical, emotional and cognitive changes. Their breasts begin to bud, followed by the beginning of their menstrual cycles in 18-24 months. Within a year after a girl has her first menstrual period, she should have her first visit with a gynecologist.

With the largest team of board-certified adolescent medicine physicians in the area, Augusta University Health offers the highest level of care to your child as they enter into this next phase of their development.

Gynecology for Young Patients

These visits can be emotional, so it’s important to select a physician who understands the unique needs of adolescents.  Our physicians know how to explain gynecologic care to your child and how to be gentle and reassuring during their visit.

Your child can ask questions about their development and access information on their physical and psychosocial health, wellness and sexuality. Physicians also counsel them on how the choices they make now will affect their physical and emotional health in years to come.

We offer:

  • Gentle, educational adolescent gynecological exams.
  • Solutions for abnormal menstrual bleeding, painful periods and other common problems.
  • Gardasil counseling and vaccines that can prevent HPV and cervical cancer.
  • STD (sexually transmitted disease) counseling, screening, diagnosis and care.
  • Quick and easy referrals to other specialists
  • An on-site lab and a full range of in-house diagnostic testing
