About

Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) physicians, or perinatologists, works collaboratively with your primary care obstetrician (OB) to ensure you and your baby are getting the highest level of care possible as you go through your pregnancy.  This is important because, if you're having a high-risk pregnancy, you will need extra attention and care to make sure you and your baby have the best outcome. 

Maternal-fetal medicine specialists care for patients with,

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Chronic health conditions

MFM also see women who:

  • are pregnant with more than one baby (multiple gestations)
  • are pregnant after 35 years of age
  • have an ultrasound that shows an abnormality

Augusta University Medical Center (AUMC) is a Regional Perinatal Center.  We are one of only six centers in the state to be designated by the Department of Public Health as a referral centers for high-risk maternal & neonatal care. We serve the entire East Central Region offering patients:

  • Fellowship-trained maternal-fetal medicine specialists: While some obstetricians offer high-risk obstetric care, our MFM specialists have additional fellowship-training and are board-certified in their field. 

  • Access to subspecialists in the same hospital: We offer a full range of pediatric subspecialists including pediatric surgeons, pediatric cardiologists and others, as well as, a Level IV (highest level) neonatal intensive care unit NICU for babies.
  • State-of-the-art ultrasound equipment: We use the latest ultrasound technology to produce 3-D and 4-D images of your baby(ies).
  • Genetic services: We offer counseling and genetic testing by a physician geneticist. Tests such as first trimester prenatal diagnosis, sequential screening, CVS testing and amniocentesis can be done.
  • High-risk support services: Including dietitians, diabetes educators, nurse educators, genetic counselors, social workers and others.
