About

The removal of the uterus, or hysterectomy, is a major surgical procedure to treat conditions like heavy menstrual bleeding, endometriosis, uterine cancer, uterine fibroids or other problems. Augusta University Health offers many different options for this surgery, including:

  • Traditional open hysterectomy, requires hospitalization, a lengthy recovery, and leaves a visible scar.
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy, surgery which require three to four incisions through which various instruments are inserted, leaving small scars at the incision sites.
  • SILS™ hysterectomy,  another type of laparoscopic hysterectomy that can alleviate scarring and other concerns.
  • Vaginal hysterectomy, require no abdominal incision, but can only be performed on select patients.
  • Robotic hysterectomy, surgical removal of the uterus, and/or other organs, using the precision of the da Vinci Surgical System.

SILS™ is a laparoscopic surgery that allows specially trained surgeons to remove the uterus using a single incision in the belly button.

The surgery is performed through a SILS™ port, a soft, flexible instrument inserted through the incision and into the abdomen. The port’s three openings allow surgeons to use three surgical instruments at the same time.

After the procedure, the port is removed, leaving just one small incision which may not be visible after healing.

Since there is only one incision for this type of surgery there are benefits such as:

  • Generally results in no visible scaring
  • Reduces trauma and healing time when compared to traditional hysterectomies
  • May reduce wound pain
  • May shorten recovery and speed return to normal activities
