Sometimes children may experience problems related to how they think, feel or behave. Pediatric Psychiatry at West Wheeler provides diagnostic assessment and treatment of ongoing medical issues for children ages 2 to 18 for conditions such as:

  • Autism
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Behavioral disturbances, such as oppositional behavior or oppositional defiance disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Developmental delays and intellectual challenges

What Parents Can Expect

If your child is having social or behavioral issues, our first step is to ask you and your child to come in for a diagnostic assessment. The 60- to 90-minute assessment involves a clinical interview, where our pediatric psychiatrist talks one on one with parents and child, then the child alone. The interview reviews:

  • Reason for the appointment
  • Social history
  • Family history
  • Birth and development
  • School performance
  • Any history of substance abuse

During follow-up visits (typically 30 minutes), treatment may involve:

  • Medication management
  • Medical management, including referrals to speech, physical and occupational therapy or other behavioral therapy
  • Individual therapy

Please inform our schedulers if there are other issues you would like to discuss or if other care providers should be interviewed during the initial assessment or follow-up visits so that we may plan for any additional time needed.
