Our Cardio-Oncology Program is one of only four such programs in the entire United States. It was developed following guidelines based on the latest data and recommendations from the U.S. Multi-Society Task Force. Patients can expect:

  • Expertise: We have a board-certified cardio-oncologist who is a leader in the field an the only designated Fellow of the International Cardio-Oncology Society (FICOS) in Georgia. 
  • Collaboration: Specially trained cardiologists works with oncologists and hematologists to preserve the heart health of patients who are receiving cancer treatment. 
  • Convenient appointments: Cardio-oncologists see patients at the Georgia Cancer Center. This allows you to receive care in one location - you no longer need to make an extra trip to the cardiovascular clinic.
  • Advanced imaging for early intervention:  Georgia Cancer Center uses electrocardiogram techniques and advanced cardiac imaging to monitor heart function throughout your cancer treatment. This equipment can detect heart muscle strain at a very early stage, allowing us to get involved as soon as there's an issue.

Taking steps to care for your heart during cancer treatment is important for preventing future risk of heart disease. Our program is in place to detect, monitor, and prevent any damage from occurring while you are undergoing treatment. We also care for patients with preexisting heart problem who are going through cancer treatment.

Cardio-oncology at AU Health offers:

  • Heart risk assessment prior to cancer treatments.
  • Care for cancer patients with existing cardiovascular disease.
  • Monitoring and treatments for heart complications found during cancer treatment.
  • Assessment of long-term cardiac risk in cancer survivors.
  • Research on heart treatments for cancer patients.
