Robotic Hysterectomy
At Augusta University Health, having a hysterectomy doesn't necessarily mean open
surgery. Our patients are often able to undergo a minimally invasive surgical procedure
using da Vinci robotic surgery.
Your doctor may recommend a simple or radical hysterectomy if you suffer from:
- Gynecologic cancer
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Menstrual pain
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine prolapse
How it Works
Better Surgical Tools. Greater Precision.
The da Vinci surgical system allows your surgeon to perform a more precise, laparoscopic minimally invasive procedure
using:
- Superior tools for more delicate, targeted and tremorless surgeries.
- Better visualization, which is critical when working around delicate and confined
structures or removing tumors. In cases of cancer, this procedure is performed by
a highly experienced gynecologic oncologist.
Simple hysterectomy
During a simple procedure, the surgeon inserts tiny instruments and a camera through
small incisions in the abdomen and removes the uterus through the vagina. A bilateral
salpingo oophorectomy may also be performed at that time to remove the ovaries and
fallopian tubes.
Radical Hysterectomy
In the case of radical hysterectomy, the uterus, surrounding tissue, cervix and top
part of the vagina are also removed. These types of hysterectomies are usually performed
to treat gynecological cancers.
Benefits
Most patients say they are happy they chose the da Vinci robotic surgery over traditional
open surgery because it allowed them to have:
- Shorter hospital stays
- Less pain
- Faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities
- Less risk of wound infection
- Less blood loss
- Less scarring
