Why Choose Us

Augusta University Health is the leader in heart surgery in the region. Our cardiothoracic surgeons have graduated from top programs which include the Cleveland Clinic, Duke University and New York University, making them experts in traditional open-heart surgeries as well as leaders in new, innovative, and minimally invasive, cardiac procedures.

Our cardiovascular center exceeds benchmarks established by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons with complication rates that are lower than those of other area hospitals.

We know the thought of cardiac surgery can make you anxious. Our team of surgeons, cardiologists, pulmonologists and physician assistants (PAs) work closely with you and your family to explain your procedure, and walk you through what to expect before, during, and after your surgery.

Our cardiothoracic surgeons will review the details of your diagnosis to determine the best surgical option for you. With the highest standards of quality outcomes, you can trust our team with a wide range of advanced surgical procedures that you won’t find available at other area hospitals.

AU Health cardiothoracic surgeons are visionaries; improving programs and procedures to give patients confidence that they are receiving the best care at our center.

Dr. Lee, our chief of cardiothoracic surgery, has partnered with Dr. Atianzar, our cardiology leader of the structural team, to develop cutting edge procedures.

  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR): A nonsurgical approach to treating aortic valve disease that cuts a patient’s hospital stay to less than a day and their recovery down from months to weeks.
  • Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement (Mitral Clip and Valve-in-Valve): This includes patients who have had previous valve replacement. AU Health is the only hospital in the region to perform this procedure.
  • Transcatheter Tricuspid Program: A nonoperative therapy to repair leaks in the tricuspid valve.

Advanced Mechanical Circulatory Support Program

Dr. Patel, a cardiothoracic surgeon, and Dr. Dunlap, a cardiologist, have teamed up to develop our Advanced Mechanical Circulatory Support Program, which includes adult ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a machine which provides support for the heart, lungs, or both. In addition, they offer catheter-based ventricular assist devices and will be introducing surgically implanted devices to patients this coming year.

Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) Program

Dr. Ward has launched a Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) Program that treats patients whose hearts are unable to pump properly due to a thickening of the heart muscle.

Our skilled cardiothoracic surgical team treats a wide array of conditions, including:

  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Aortic dissection
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Benign conditions of the esophagus
  • Cancers, such as lung and esophageal
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy
  • Left ventricular aneurysm
