Our Approach

The specific details of your diagnosis will determine the type of surgery our cardiothoracic surgeons will recommend. With the highest standards of quality outcomes, you can trust our team with a wide range of innovative surgical procedures that you won’t find at other centers in the area.

Our surgeons are experts in traditional open-heart surgeries as well as leaders in new, innovative, and minimally invasive procedures.

Minimally Invasive Atrial Fibrillation Surgery

The surgical team at Augusta University Cardiovascular Center for Heart Care is the only one in the region to offer minimally invasive atrial fibrillation surgery. Also referred to as "mini maze," this procedure allows us to correct electrical irregularities in the atria without having to conduct open-heart surgery.

This specialized surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes 2 to 3 hours to complete and offers fewer potential complications as well as a much shorter hospital stay than with open-heart surgery.

Our skilled cardiothoracic surgical team treats a wide array of conditions with surgical procedures, many times with minimally invasive options, including:

  • Aortic dissection
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Left ventricular aneurysm
  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Valve disease
  • Coronary artery bypass, including "off- pump" beating heart surgery
  • Carotid endarterectomy to clear carotid arteries
  • Mechanical assist device placement
  • Valve replacement and repair
  • Repair of congenital heart defects
  • Surgery for aortic aneurysms
