Why Choose Us

AU Health is one of the area leaders in cardiothoracic surgery. Cardiothoracic surgeon provide advanced diagnostic and surgical options at  Augusta University Cardiovascular Center to adults and children. AU surgeons have graduated from some of the nation's top programs from institutions including the Cleveland Clinic, Duke University and New York University, making them highly trained in traditional open-heart surgeries as well as leaders in new, innovative and minimally invasive procedures.

Our center exceeds benchmarks established by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons with complication rates lower than those of other area hospitals.

We know that patients facing cardiothoracic surgery can feel anxious. We'll go over all the details of your diagnosis to help you understand your surgical options, as well as, what to expect with your procedure. This way, patients can be confident in the care they are receiving at our cardiovascular center. We offer a wide range of advanced surgical procedures, including coronary bypass surgery, valve surgery, and surgeries for atrial fibrillation (such as MAZE).

Your AU Health team includes cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, pulmonologists, physician assistants (PAs), anesthesiologists, pharmacists, cardiac rehabilitation specialists and nurses.

AU Health cardiothoracic surgeons are visionaries; always striving to improve programs and procedures.

Advanced procedures offered at AU Health

Dr. Richard Lee, chief of cardiothoracic surgery, has partnered with Dr. Kimberly Atianzar, our cardiology leader of the structural team, to develop these cutting-edge procedures at AU:

  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR): A nonsurgical approach to treating aortic valve disease that cuts a patient’s hospital stay to less than a day and their recovery down from months to weeks.
  • Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement (Mitral Clip and Valve-in-Valve): This includes patients who have had previous valve replacement. AU Health is the only hospital in the region to perform this procedure.
  • Transcatheter Tricuspid Program: A nonoperative therapy to repair leaks in the tricuspid valve.

Advanced Mechanical Circulatory Support Program

Dr. Vijay Patel, a cardiothoracic surgeon, and Dr. Stephanie Dunlap, a cardiologist, have teamed up to develop our Advanced Mechanical Circulatory Support Program,

  • Adult ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation): a machine which provides support for the heart, lungs, or both. In addition, they offer catheter-based ventricular assist devices and will be introducing surgically implanted devices to patients this coming year.
  • Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) Program: Dr. Ward has launched a Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) Program that treats patients whose hearts are unable to pump properly due to a thickening of the heart muscle.

Our skilled cardiothoracic surgical team treats a wide array of conditions, including:

  • Aortic aneurysm
