About Us

 We provide:

  • A full staff of board-certified and fellowship-trained sports medicine specialists, including orthopaedic surgeons, primary care physicians and advanced practice professionals (nurse practitioners and physician assistants);
  • The area’s largest team of licensed Certified Athletic Trainers, working with professional and student athletes on the field and in the clinic;
  • Licensed sports physical therapists;
  • Easy, onsite access to a vast array of subspecialists for sports injury-related issues, including eye specialists, plastic surgeons, oral surgeons, cardiologists, neurologists and more; and
  • A state-of-the-art rehabilitation center.

The experienced physicians at Augusta University Sports Medicine in Augusta, GA, diagnose and treat the full range of sports trauma and overuse injuries in athletes and active people. Skilled caregivers will perform a thorough evaluation to determine which physician best suits your needs. The team prefers nonsurgical solutions whenever possible and offers the following:

  • A full range of diagnostic tests, including MRIs, ultrasounds, X-rays and CT scans;
  • Injections, aspirations and other nonsurgical care by a board-certified family practice physician who is fellowship trained in primary care sports medicine;
  • Arthroscopic and traditional and innovative surgeries ranging from knee and shoulder scopes to total joint replacements by an orthopaedic surgeon fellowship trained in sports medicine;
  • Easy access to our rehabilitation center;
  • Evaluation and care for issues that affect athletic performance, such as heat, head injuries and concussion, exercise-induced asthma, exercise prescriptions and runners' injuries;
  • Easy access to the physicians in Augusta University Orthopaedics, which includes physicians who are fellowship trained in virtually every orthopaedic subspecialty, including spine, foot and ankle and hand surgery;
  • Splints and casts by a trained and experienced technician; and
  • Easy appointments, with emergencies generally seen on the same day.

Many sports injuries can be prevented with proper conditioning and training, wearing appropriate protective gear and using proper equipment.

About 95 percent of sports injuries are due to minor trauma involving soft tissue injuries - injuries that affect the muscles, ligaments, and/or tendons, including:

  • Contusions (bruises)
  • Sprains
  • Strains

At Augusta University Sports Medicine, our focus is as much on prevention as it is treatment, whether you have a complex, multi-ligament knee injury or a simple sprain or strain.

Our programs focus on keeping you healthy and active and include the following:

  • A regional concussion center to provide education, prevent and treat concussions.
  • An athlete’s heart program. Together with Augusta University cardiologists, we provide screening and care to catch and treat heart problems in athletes before there’s a problem.
  • Golf injury prevention and rehabilitation, with our Titleist-certified golf rehabilitation specialists.
  • Fall Sports Injury Clinic to treat your child’s non-emergent sports injuries on Saturdays during high school football season.

We also offer:

  • A full range of traditional and innovative arthroscopic surgery for every type of injury.
  • Advanced fixation for broken bones.
  • Injections and aspirations to relieve pain and inflammation for acute or chronic injuries .
  • Prescriptions for bracing, orthotics and medications.
  • Physical therapy within an onsite, state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility.
