About Stilianos Emmanuel Kountakis, MD, PhD

Dr. Kountakis received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, Texas and his medical degree from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. He completed his otolaryngology residency training at the UT-Houston Medical School affiliated hospitals and received a PhD degree from the University of Crete Medical School. He came to Augusta University in 2003 from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, where he was Director of the Division of Rhinology and Virginia Sinus Center. Dr. Kountakis is Vice President of the Southern Section of the American Laryngological, Rhinological, and Otological Society (aka Triological Society), and a member of the Board of Directors and Past President of the Georgia Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is Past President of the American Rhinologic Society and received the society�s 2011 Golden Mirror Teaching Award. He is Editor-in-Chief of the first encyclopedia of otolaryngology, the five-volume �Encyclopedia of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery�. His research interests include pathophysiology and pathogenesis of sinusitis, medical and surgical outcomes, immune parameters in sinusitis, allergic fungal sinusitis, pathophysiology of nasal polyps, and leukotrienes in chronic sinusitis. He is consistently ranked among America�s Best Doctors.

Dr. Kountakis specializes in diseases of the nose and sinus, including chronic sinusitis, anterior skull bases tumors (such as olfactory neuroblastoma, encephalocele), sleep apnea, and septal defects such as those requiring a septoplasty.
