Our Approach
The Pediatric Urology Department at Children’s Hospital of Georgia in Augusta provides comprehensive evaluations,
diagnoses, surgeries and follow-up care for congenital or acquired disorders of the
genitourinary tract in newborns to age 18.
We treat urological conditions in all pediatric patients. The basis of pediatric urology
is the urinary system which is comprised of the bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra.
We also treat conditions of the penis and testicles, vaginal conditions, and elimination
disorders such as bedwetting and incontinence. If your child has issues with their
urinary tract or genitals, they may need to be seen by our pediatric urologists.

Diagnostic Tests and Procedures
We offer diagnostic procedures and treatments, including surgical procedures, for
genital and urological issues.
Clinic procedures
- Uroflow/Electromyography (EMG), Bladder Scan, and Biofeedback: used to determine the amount of urine in the bladder prior to and after voiding,
speed of urine flow, and the muscles used during voiding.
- Ultrasonography: used to determine the cause of pain, swelling, and infection and evaluate organ damage.
- Urine culture: analyze the presence of bacteria in urine that causes infection.
- Circumcisions: if meets criteria, can be performed in clinic
Radiological and OR procedures
- Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG): minimally invasive test to visualize your child's urinary tract and bladder to diagnose vesicoureteral
reflux, determine why your child has recurring urinary tract infections, determine
if antibiotic treatment or anti-reflux surgery was effective, and check if there are
any abnormalities or blockages of the urethra.
- Urodynamic Studies (FUDS): test how well the bladder, sphincters, and urethra hold and release urine and show
how well the bladder works and why there could be leaks or blockages
- Nuclear Imaging, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and Computerized Tomography (CT):
radiological testing used to diagnose masses in the urinary tract, kidney stones,
renal cysts, and determine renal function.
- Antegrade and Retrograde Pyelography: radiological imaging used to diagnose hydronephrosis and urinary tract obstructions.
- Retrograde Urethrogram: used to evaluate and diagnosis complications of the urethra.
Pediatric Urology Surgery Procedures
Our department performs open, endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures.
- Pediatric Robotics: We have the only fellowship trained, specialized pediatric urologist that performs
pediatric robotic procedures in the area.
- Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS): many diagnostic procedures and urological surgeries can be performed using minimally
invasive surgery. We have surgeons who are specialized in performing these procedures.
