About Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic disorder that is genetic. It causes the body to make thick sticky mucus that builds up in the lungs and cells in other parts of the body.  This disease affects many functions of a child’s body including how they breathe, how they grow, and their digestive tract.

We are a Cystic Fibrosis Center, one of only two facilities in all of Georgia accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving care and treatment of people with CF. The Foundation has established clinical care guidelines to guarantee quality of care, which the Children’s Hospital of Georgia follows. We offer:

  • Pulmonologists who specialize in treating children with cystic fibrosis and are supported by nurse practitioners, nurses, and other team members who specialize in CF.
  • A collaborative and multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, otolaryngologists, surgeons, respiratory therapists, dietitians, medical social workers, nurses, and pharmacists.
  • Psychologists who help cope with the impact of chronic illness
  • Ongoing research and access to clinical trials
  • Smooth transitions to our accredited Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program
  • Patient Family Centered Care

Cystic fibrosis is important to diagnose and treat as soon as possible because it is a progressive disease that gets more serious as a child gets older.

  • Pediatric Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) Lab: We use child-friendly equipment and procedures to diagnose and treat pediatric patients with lung conditions and diseases.
  • Sweat testing:  a test to diagnose cystic fibrosis. Our pediatric pulmonary function lab is accredited to perform sweat testing. This test may be recommended based on newborn screen results or clinical signs/symptoms of cystic fibrosis.
