Surgery at Augusta University Medical Center

If you have a surgery scheduled, please read all of the information on this page carefully. It is important that you follow all of these steps to prepare for surgery.

FIRST STEPS

  • Call your surgeon to report any changes in your physical condition (i.e. sore throat, fever, cold)
  • The date and time of your surgery has been reserved for you. If you cannot keep your appointment time, please call your surgeon’s office.
  • IF YOU ARE GOING HOME the same day as your surgery, bring someone to drive you home. For your safety, a responsible adult must remain with you for 24 hours after surgery.
  • You will call 706-721-8896 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. the business day prior to your surgery to obtain your arrival time. (i.e. Monday surgery will call the Friday before)

MEDICINES

  • Take your medications the morning of surgery as instructed during your pre-op interview.
  • Bring a current list of all your medications (or your medications in their original containers) with you the day of surgery.
  • STOP any vitamins, fish oil, herbal supplements, anti-inflammatory products (i.e. aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Aleve) one week before surgery unless otherwise instructed by your cardiologist and/or surgeon.

DAY BEFORE SURGERY

  • DO NOT EAT or DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT. This includes gum, candy, mints, coffee, water, etc.
  • DO NOT SMOKE or DRINK ALCOHOL 24 hours before and after your surgery.
  • DO NOT SHAVE or REMOVE HAIR from any part of your body.
  • Shower the morning and night before your surgery. See bathing instructions below.

DAY OF SURGERY

  • Shower again.
  • Brush your teeth and use an antiseptic mouthwash. This helps decrease postoperative complications such as pneumonia.
  • DO NOT wear makeup, lotion, perfume, deodorants, hairpins, jewelry, body piercings, fake hairpieces (such as weaves/wigs), or acrylic nails the day of surgery.
  • Follow medication instructions as listed above.
  • If you wear contact lenses, dentures, hearing aids, bring storage cases with you.
  • Leave all money and valuables at home.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothes.

Parking and Locations

  • Park in the Medical Center Parking Deck directly off of 15th Street. After turning in from 15th Street, enter the deck through the "Patient & Visitor Entrance" (also labeled "P1").
  • After parking, head to Medical Center Entrance B to check in on the 1st floor directly behind the information desk at Patient Access Services.
  • Go up to the 8th floor / 8 west.

BATHING INSTRUCTIONS

Showering before surgery reduces the amount of germs on your skin. This helps prevent infection. 

SHOWER 3 TIMES. The morning and night before your surgery and the morning of your surgery.

ABOVE THE NECK surgery

  • Start your shower by washing your hair with liquid antibacterial soap (i.e.. Dial) instead of your normal shampoo.
  • Turn water off.
  • Gently wash your entire body with liquid antibacterial soap for 5 minutes.
  • Turn water on and rinse off soap. 

BELOW THE NECK surgery

  • Wash your hair with your normal shampoo and rinse.
  • Shower with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG). Turn water off. Wash with this soap from your neck down for 5 minutes. Do not use above your neck or on your private parts.
  • Turn water on and rinse.
  • *Liquid antibacterial soap (Dial) is a substitute for CHG if needed.

After each shower:

  • Use a clean towel.
  • Put on clean clothes.
  • The morning of your surgery DO NOT use makeup, lotions/creams, hair styling products, or deodorant after your shower.
