Complex Spine Surgery at Augusta University Medical Center

Augusta University Medical Center offers a dedicated team of spine specialists. Dr. John G. DeVine is the Chief of Spine Surgery and Director of the Augusta University Spine Fellowship, providing advanced care for simple to complex spine problems in patients of all ages. Charlie Wispert, PA-C, is an integral part of the spine specialists team, providing consultation and screening for spine problems and referring for surgical consultation when necessary.

Dr. DeVine came to Augusta University in 2014 upon retirement from the U.S. Army from Eisenhower Army Medical Center, where he served as the program director of the orthopaedic surgery residency and director of spinal reconstructive surgery for the southeast region. He earned his medical degree from the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and completed his orthopaedic residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. His additional training includes complex spinal reconstructive surgery at the Maryland Spine Fellowship in Baltimore. In addition to his work at Augusta University, Dr. DeVine is a member of numerous professional societies, including the North American Spine Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Association. He has served extensively over the last 10 years as faculty and, most recently, chair-elect of the education committee for AOSpine North America. He has served as a member of the editorial board for The Spine Journal and Global Spine Journal. He has more than 40 peer-reviewed publications to his credit.

Charlie Wispert, PA-C earned his degree from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University and has a strong background in orthopaedics. He began working with Dr. DeVine in 2009 and joined the team of spine specialists in 2015.
