Our Approach

Active people don't like to be out of commission for very long. That's why Augusta University has created a program that focuses specifically on caring for patients with sports-related trauma and overuse injuries. Our team offers:

  • Sports medicine specialists: Our board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons and specialists provide complete orthopaedic care. They work with advanced practice providers, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
  • Subspecialists: We can easily refer you to our many subspecialists for additional care depending on your needs. This includes eye specialists, plastic surgeons, oral surgeons, cardiologists, neurologists and others who can offer their expertise.
  • Athletic trainers: Licensed and certified, our athletic trainers work with professional and student athletes, both on the field and in the clinic.
  • Sports physical therapists: Your rehabilitation is provided by our licensed sports physical therapists, trained to rehabilitate athletes based on their specific sport in our state-of-the-art facility located steps away from our offices.

AU Health uses the latest options for diagnosis and treatment of athletes, we offer:

  • Performance evaluation: You can come to us for an evaluation if you have issues that affect athletic performance.
  • Motion analysis and isokinetic testing: We use tools to analyze your body movement. Theses advanced software programs evaluate how well you are moving before and after surgery (or rehabilitation).
  • Concussion testing: As a regional concussion center, we use advanced diagnostic software to evaluate head injuries and develop effective treatment plans.
  • Orthopaedic surgery: If you need surgery, surgeons can perform both arthroscopic and traditional surgeries, everything from knee and shoulder scopes to total joint replacements.

What makes our athletic trainers stand out

We are not personal trainers, we are licensed allied health professionals, earning a four-year degree and passing a national board examination. We are trained to evaluate, diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate everything from concussions to sprained ankles.

Think of us this way, we are like a physician, a physical therapist, a nurse, and a paramedic - all rolled into one.

What we do

We see patients in our West Wheeler location, but most of the time, we are out in the community - at sports practices, home games, even some away games. We are there to provide quality care and education to athletes so they can perform at their best. Athletic trainers are often an athlete’s main source of primary health care. The following are some of the services we provide:

  • Pre-season physicals
  • Cardiac screenings
  • Teaching athletes the right mechanics to avoid injury
  • Concussion education

Building the future of sports medicine

Through our program, athletic trainers are able to teach classes at local high schools. They talk to students about careers in the health field and sports medicine, offering education and advice about a future in this exciting profession.

Every March, more than 200 students get to spend a day at Augusta University Medical Center (AUMC) and will tour the Medical College of Georgia and the College of Allied Health at Augusta University.
