What is PRP

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections use the platelets from your own blood to promote natural healing. We do this by isolating your platelets and injecting them into the problem area, stimulating your body to increase recovery at and around the injection site. Augusta University orthopaedic providers are specially trained to perform these injections.

The best part is that, since we are using your blood, you are less likely to have a reaction as you might with injected medications or synthetic products.

PRP injections can be done almost anywhere on your body. It is a non-invasive way to treat pain and inflammation in muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints. We treat:

  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Chronic joint pain
  • Minor tears
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendonitis

Platelet-rich plasma injection is a same-day procedure performed in our office. You can often be in and out within an hour, and we can treat multiple areas during the same visit. When you come to us:

  • Your blood is drawn and put into a special machine that spins out the platelet rich plasma.
  • Your plasma is then injected back into the problem area(s) using ultrasound to guide the needle to the precise spot where it is needed.
  • You may feel pain at the injection site, but it will go away after a few days.
  • You should begin to fell better within a few weeks. How long your results last varies from person to person.
  • The risk of infection at the injection site is low, but can happen. Overall the PRP procedure is safe with little or no downtime or side effects.
