Transfusion Services

The Blood Bank plays a vital role in the care of our patients at AU Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Georgia.

Our Approach

We provide testing and blood products for all patients, including those with sickle cell disease, having surgeries, receiving transplants, undergoing chemotherapy, and patients residing in the intensive care units. We also provide specialized products for pediatric patients in the neonatal units, hematology/oncology clinics and those having open heart surgery.

The Blood Bank performs the collection and processing of Hematopoietic Stem Cells for the Bone Marrow Transplant Program. Stem cells are collected by the Apheresis Department and given to the Blood Bank where the cells are processed, frozen and stored until they are transplanted. With 65 being performed in 2018, the number of stem cells being processed for stem cell transplants is increasing every year.

The AU Medical Center’s Blood Bank provides the highest quality of testing and standards. We have passed and maintain accreditation with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT).

In order to maintain a blood bank and to ensure there is enough blood for everyone, people must donate. Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only be obtained from blood donations. For the small amount of your time that it would take to make one blood donation, you could help several people. Imagine how many lives you could help save with more than one donation.

Immunohematology (Blood Banking) is the study of red blood cell antigens (proteins found on the red blood cell) and antibodies (proteins produced to counteract a specific antigen/protein) associated with blood transfusions. There are more than 230 types of antigens/proteins present on the surface of red blood cells.

The Blood Bank screens and identifies antibodies and performs tests to find compatible blood for patients. We find and prepare other blood products to aid when patients are bleeding and require blood products like plasma and platelets. Plasma is the liquid portion of whole blood, and it is used to treat conditions where there are low blood clotting factors. Platelets are tiny cells that help the body form clots to stop bleeding.

The Blood Bank at AU Health provides over 20,000 units of blood products for transfusions annually.
