What is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

In vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) was first successfully completed in 1978; since then, millions of children have been born this way, some of whom now are second-generation children conceived with IVF assistance.

IVF is a procedure that enhances the chance of pregnancy in couples for which other fertility therapies have been unsuccessful or are not possible. It involves multiple steps resulting in the insemination and fertilization of eggs in a laboratory.

1. Ovarian stimulation

2. Egg retrieval

3. Egg insemination with sperm

4. Incubation of embryos

5. Embryo transfer

6. Post-transfer care
