Remember: Create a DSN for advanced imaging exams

If your patient is coming to us for an advanced imaging exam, you will need to register with CareSelect™ Imaging - Open Access to receive a DSN (AUC/CDS code) to add to the above Imaging Referral Form.

Exams such as CT, MRI, NucMed, PET are advanced imaging exams. As an external provider, you will need to generate a unique consultation identifier know as a Decision Support Number (DSN) each time you send a patient to AU Health.

CareSelect™ Imaging – Open Access

First, you need to register on CareSelect™ Imaging – Open Access.  Once registered, it’s easy to obtain a DSN; simply access the portal any time to generate codes for all your advanced imaging referrals.

CareSelect™ Imaging – Open Access is qualified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as a Clinical Decision Support Mechanism (CDSM) and will generate a consultation session and data to facilitate compliance with the new Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA).

Effective January 1, 2022, the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) requires providers to consult Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC), authored by qualified providers through a qualified Clinical Decision Support Mechanism (CDSM) for all advanced imaging ordered under Medicare Part B. Advanced imaging exams for the following modalities (CT, MRI, NucMed, PET) will now trigger integrated clinical decisions support (CDS)

For more information about the CareSelect™ Imaging – Open Access portal, see our frequently asked questions:

Through CareSelect™ Imaging, we can provide external ordering providers access to Clinical Decision Support (CDS) regardless of access to EMR integrated CDS solution.

The portal offers external providers consult for advanced imaging orders and validates the appropriateness of the order against clinical standards as recommended by the American College of Radiology (ACR)® and other qualified entities.

Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) are the clinical standards determined by qualified Provider-Led Entities (qPLE) to comply with the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA), these qualified entities include:

  • American College of Radiology (ACR)®
  • Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging
  • American College of Cardiology
  • National Comprehensive Cancer Network™

No, the Open Access Portal does not use Protected Health Information (PHI) in any form.

External providers who refer patients to AU Health Imaging are required to obtain a Unique Consultation Identifier know as a Decision Support Number (DSN).  A DSN is generated each time an ordering provider consults a CDSM and must be included on the order, along with the name and National Provider Identifier (NPI) of the ordering professional.

Generate Decision Support Number (DSN) – a DSN is generated for the ordering provider to include in their referral form for compliance and billing.

Providers will receive feedback on an order via a score – green, yellow, red - for the appropriateness of the order based on the patient's reason for the exam and when applicable are presented alternative exam choices based on cost and patient safety.
