Living with Heart Disease

If you are living with heart disease, you can actually help control your condition. By making certain lifestyle changes, you can improve the health of your heart and live a longer, more fulfilling life. To live well with heart disease, adopt the following habits as the first step in taking charge of your heart health:

Commit to a Heart-Healthy Diet

Fill your diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, fish, reduced fat dairy products, and whole grains. You should also reduce your salt intake and stay away from processed foods and trans-fat.

Exercise Daily

You don’t have to sign up for a marathon to get exercise. You could simply take the stairs instead of the elevator, park your car far away from the store, take a yoga class at a local gym or community center, walk around your neighborhood, and take other small steps to become more active.

Quit Smoking

The day you quit smoking will be the day that your heart will start to rejuvenate and repair itself. Since smoking can drastically damage your heart and blood vessels, you should make every effort to quit if you currently smoke.

Reduce Stress

Although you can’t control some of what happens in your life, you can control how you react to it and lower your stress levels as a result. Meditation, yoga, Pilates, tai-chi, deep breathing, and spending time with loved ones can reduce your stress.
