LaShawn K. Oates, a native of Augusta, Georgia, graduated from the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree as a Cum Laude Honor Graduate. She continued her education at Walden University and earned a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree in 2016 and became certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in 2017.

LaShawn began her nursing career as a registered nurse in the surgical intensive care unit at MCG and then continued to grow as a nurse in the pediatric operating room, interventional radiology and mammography. LaShawn has been a nurse practitioner in the Pediatric Gastroenterology (GI) Clinic since 2017.

Her clinical practice involves relieving discomfort in children by diagnosing and treating complications within the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, pancreas, and gallbladder. In addition to seeing pediatric patients for GI symptoms, LaShawn has recently developed a program known as Paws4Health. This program is a multidisciplinary program at the Children's Hospital of Georgia to treat pediatric patients with obesity. The goal is to educate and empower patients and their families to improve weight control and achieve an overall better health and quality of life.

Outside of work, LaShawn enjoys spending time with her family, running and reading. She currently resides in Evans, Georgia, with her husband, children, tortoise and Great Dane.
