Center for Mohs Micrographic Surgery

A limited number of doctors are qualified to perform Mohs surgery. These are Dermatologists who have completed an approved fellowship in Mohs surgery and who are members of the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. When properly done, this technique has the highest cure rates possible, often approaching 100%.

Mohs micrographic surgery is the most effective way of removing certain skin cancers, particularly those that spread deep and wide with root-like projections. In addition to offering the highest cure rate for many skin cancers, the precision of the technique also maximizes preservation of surrounding healthy tissue.

Once the Mohs surgery is completed, a defect or hole will be left where the tumor once was. Often times this can be repaired quite simply, however, in some cases, a more comprehensive repair is necessary requiring the use of skin grafts and flaps.

Surgical procedures are carried out in private procedure rooms and are usually performed under local or regional anesthesia. Our specialty trained medical staff will make every effort to ease any anxiety and ensure you are comfortable the day of surgery. Cases requiring a more comprehensive repair or surgical reconstruction will be carried out under deep sedation or general anesthesia in the AUMC operating room.

Our multidisciplinary team of physicians can perform this procedure around the eyes, nose, scalp, lips and ears. Our center offers a team-oriented approach to skin cancer treatment. The team consists of medical experts that are board certified and fellowship trained in multiple specialties including Dermatology, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery and Oculoplastics. Through collaboration, the team approach allows us to deliver the highest standard of care for skin cancer prevention, detection and management.  Our physicians are committed to offering the most advanced, state-of-the-art skin cancer care available.
