About

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women today. If you (or a loved one) is worried about breast cancer, has recently been diagnosed, is going through treatment, or is a survivor of breast cancer, Georgia Cancer Center and AU Health are here to help, at any stage, in your fight against cancer.

Early warning signs of breast cancer

You can take an active role in early detection if you notice any changes in your breasts, such as:

  • A non-tender lump in the breast
  • Changes in the size or shape of your breast
  • Retracted nipple
  • Nipple discharge that is clear or bloody
  • Skin dimpling or indentation
  • Skin has orange-peel texture

If you think you might have any of the above symptoms, it is important to see your physician as soon as possible. Remember, breast cancer can also occur in men as well as women. Men should also be aware of the symptoms and speak to their doctor if they notice changes in their breast tissue.

NAPBC

Accreditation

AU Health has an NAPBC Accredited Breast Center designation by the American College of Surgeons. This is awarded to medical centers that offer the most advanced breast cancer diagnostic and treatment options.

  • Collaboration: The best breast health care is provided by a team of experts. Augusta University Health brings together our medical and surgical breast oncologists, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists, and diagnostic radiologists to create a personalized care plan designed specifically for your cancer treatment needs.
  • Breast cancer nurse navigators: Your breast cancer nurse navigators provide guidance and helpful information. Don’t hesitate to call them with any questions or concerns about diagnosis, treatment or care.
  • Breast cancer genetic counseling and testing: Through research, we know that inherited genetic factors such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 have been identified as potential indicators for increased risk of developing breast cancer. We provide genetic counseling and testing to look for these inherited conditions.

The benefits of clinical research

Augusta University fosters close interaction between basic science researchers and breast cancer clinicians. Through this clinical research, we are able to improve care and reduce the burden of cancer in the patients we serve. As an academic medical center, we are able to offer clinical trials for new treatments not available anywhere else in the region.

We offer the area's most advanced diagnostic tools, including 3D mammography, treating patients through all phases of breast cancer, from diagnosis and treatment to recovery and survivorship.
