The Augusta, Georgia Region’s Only Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Suite

“I said, ‘I want him to go to Augusta and to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia.’ Jesse was there within six hours of being born and had his first cardiac catheterization when he was three weeks old. We have a few more procedures in his future, but I love how the team makes us feel comfortable and lets us know everything going on during the procedure. I especially love how we get to be there with our child up until he goes into the cath lab—it’s a very family-friendly environment.”

--Sarah Sasser, mom to Jesse, 8 months, who has undergone three cardiac catheterizations and a Glenn procedure for his pulmonary atresia

Our Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization program, also referred to as interventional procedures, is among the best in the nation and is one of only three such programs in Georgia and South Carolina. Any cardiac intervention approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—and any performed at any children’s hospital in the United States—is available here at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia. It’s why we serve as a regional training center for physicians across the country for interventional procedures such as closure of atrial septal defects. Our program also performs procedures for adult congenital heart patients.

It all starts inside our Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Lab, a state-of-the-art facility featuring advanced imaging technology.

Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Lab

During a cardiac catheterization, a thin flexible tube is inserted into a vein or artery and guided to the heart through advanced imaging. Physicians can then diagnose the type and severity of pediatric heart defects and perform procedures to treat these defects, often avoiding the need for open heart surgery.

At our lab, the Siemens Axiom Artis zee imaging system combines the best of both worlds: precise and detailed images for our interventionalists along with low-dose radiation exposure for our pediatric patients. Its biplane flat-panel detector system was designed specifically for pediatric patients, with:

  • Rapid acquisition and display of 3D images in real time
  • High positioning flexibility and patient access
  • Unrestricted angulations, which allow interventionalists to perform procedures and access an overview, all at the same time

Before and after procedures, families can remain together in our comfortable, private patient areas, featuring a flat screen television for patient distraction and entertainment. An open nurses’ station is conveniently located right next to this area.

The lab is equipped to perform standard interventional procedures as well as those that could benefit from a hybrid approach
