Our Dynamic History
As the area’s only academic health center, we pride ourselves in offering the latest treatments and technologies, provided by the most highly skilled and trained physicians in the world.
Medical Discoveries through Clinical Excellence
Our history starts over 188 years ago when the Medical Academy of Georgia was founded by the Medical Society of Augusta to address a need to train new physicians. Many discoveries were made including the first treatment of documented sickle cell disease and the first hysterectomy performed in the United States. Our location quickly became known for its research, clinical expertise, and highly-skilled physicians.
Under the MCG brand, the health system was recognized as the Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics, MCG Health System and MCGHealth. During this time, our health system gained momentum with recognition for our Level 1 Trauma Center, award winning imaging and surgical care with excellence in neuroscience and cancer treatment.
National Expertise for Pediatric Care
In 1998, the Children’s Medical Center was opened as one of the largest pediatric facilities in the United States offering the latest treatments for children in heart, cancer, neurology and much more. The hospital houses the area’s only 24/7 pediatric emergency department along with a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The name was changed to Children’s Hospital of Georgia in 2013 to reflect the hospital’s reach across the state.
Focus on Comprehensive Health Sciences through System Approach
In 2010, leadership changes and a focus on all health sciences including medicine, dentistry, nursing and allied health sciences supported a name change to Georgia Health Sciences Health System. This change reinforces the value brought to patients that in one location, you have access to the area’s largest multi-specialty practice.
In 2013, the affiliated university of the health system consolidated with a four-year liberal arts university causing another name change to Georgia Regents Health System (GRHealth). During this transition, transformational partnerships with Philips Healthcare were initiated, continuing the legacy of providing the latest technologies and equipment to deliver the best care to our patients and their families.
Transition from GRHealth to Augusta University
Most recently, in response to the needs of the community, our university changed to Augusta University in 2015. By adopting Augusta University as the brand for the health system, patients and their families, our community understands that the academic medical center advantage means better care and better outcomes. At Augusta University, we are nurses, doctors and caregivers - and we have created a place like no other to benefit the health of you, your family, our community and beyond.
